Cognitive Benefits of Healthy Space

Joseph Allen et al's 2015 two-part study:

  • Part 1: Syracuse University Center for Excellence. Allen's team manipulated environmental factors such as ventilation rates, the assessed cognitive performance in nine key areas. Knowledge workers in optimized environments scored 131% better in crisis-response questions, 299% better on information usage, and 288% higher in strategy.
  • Part 2: 10 green-certified, high-performing buildings nationwide. Workers performed 26% better on cognitive-function assessments and 25% increase in sleep scores than those in non-certified buildings.
  • Cost of making changes would be about $40 per person per year. Would result in a $6,500 increase in employee productivity.
